My dad passed away five years ago.
Since then, my stepmom has kept all of his belongings locked away. She never offered anything to me or my sisters — not even small sentimental things. Every time we asked, she shut us down instantly.
One of the items we always wished we could have was my dad’s old guitar.
It’s nothing fancy, just meaningful.
But after five years?
We all assumed the answer would always be no.
Recently, my husband got the idea to surprise me for Christmas by asking my stepmom if he could have the guitar. He didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, so he asked my permission first.
I said yes.
Not because I wanted to exclude my sisters, but because:
I genuinely didn’t believe she’d say yes
We’re all basically no-contact with her
If I DID ask my sisters, they all would have said yes… but only if THEY were the ones to get it
And there’s no way to “split” a guitar three ways
Shockingly, my stepmom actually agreed and gave my husband the guitar.
I was stunned.
It’s the first — and probably last — thing any of us will ever get from my dad’s belongings.
When we told my sisters, instead of being happy, they were furious.
They said I should have:
held a “family meeting”
gotten “collective permission”
or allowed them a chance to ask for it first
They’re calling it “unfair” and “sneaky,” even accusing me of taking advantage of being the only sister who still lives in the same state.
From my perspective…
If three daughters all want the same single object, the only “fair” solution would’ve been no one gets it — which is exactly why I didn’t expect this to happen at all.
So now they’re upset, I’m confused, and I’m wondering:
AITA for letting my husband ask for the guitar without looping in my sisters first?
Повторяем попытку...
