Five Decades — One Mission is a six-video series that celebrates the golden anniversary of the founding of the US animal rights movement. The 1975 publication of Animal LIberation led two dozen animal activists to confront the cruel practice of vivisection. The 1975 World Vegetarian Congress in Orono, Maine, led to the formation of 60 vegetarian societies throughout the US. In 1981, the two groups coalesced at the Action for Life Conference in Allentown, Pennsylvania to formalize the US animal rights movement.
The six videos begin with renowned philosopher Peter Singer and American Vegan Society’s president Freya Dinshah relating the history and impacts of Animal Liberation and the Vegetarian Congress. Subsequent videos recount how our movement’s early campaigns, conferences, magazines, and books forged the actions of individual activists into a cohesive movement. The last two videos celebrate eight movement pioneers who are no longer with us and discuss our movement’s impact, accomplishments, and future prospects.
