LtGen Sattler sat in on a briefing for a convoy of 50 trucks from the Turkish border back to base, where he met a Marine logistician who had completed his tasks by working overtime so that he could volunteer for duty. It wasn’t a situation of “Free a warrior to fight, but rather it was be a warrior and go fight.”

He spoke about the fight for Fallujah and the FSSG setting up Camp Fallujah and the “Iron Mountain” to ensure that a “warrior on the battlefield never wanted for the tools to fight.”

Logisticians also played a key role in Iraq’s first free elections after the fall of Saddam Hussein. They created and secured election sites and transported workers and election officials by forming the Spartan Battalion to secure 19 polling locations.
