The Sunday of Orthodoxy is celebrated on the first Sunday of Great Lent to commemorate the definitive restoration of holy icons to the churches in 843 AD. This event marked the end of the second period of Iconoclasm, a turbulent era where the veneration of images was banned, and icons were systematically destroyed. Led by Empress Theodora and Patriarch Methodios, the faithful processed through the streets of Constantinople to return the icons to the Cathedral of Hagia Sophia. This victory was not merely a change in liturgical policy but was viewed as a confirmation of the true faith over heresy.

Theologically, the commemoration emphasizes the reality of the Incarnation. The Church teaches that because God became a human being in the person of Jesus Christ, he became visible and can therefore be depicted in art. Rejecting icons was seen as a rejection of Christ's true humanity. During the services on this day, the "Synodikon of Orthodoxy" is proclaimed, which affirms that icons are not idols but windows to the divine that lead the believer to the prototype they represent. The celebration concludes with a procession where the faithful hold their own icons, symbolizing the ongoing triumph of Christian truth throughout history.
