In this ECHO session, Dr. Patterson of the Nevada Advanced Pain Specialists discusses Opioid Weaning Protocols. DR. Patterson introduces when to consider weaning a patient off of opioids and what to consider when weaning. Dr. Patterson emphasizes that when the deficits of opioid use outweigh the benefits, you need to immediately consider weaning. Abnormal drug screens are the first indication of a substance use disorder in patients. It is important to also manage dosing as to not have an accidental overdose. Each patient requires an individual tapering plan in order to minimize any possible risk. The main rule of thumb in tapering is to decrease by 10% after 1 a year of consistent opioid use and then progress appropriately. It can also be beneficial to have consultations to maximize safety protocols. Dr. Patterson’s presentation best aids healthcare professionals in preventing the continuation of the opioid pandemic.
