The European Union (EU) has imposed a ban on India's Nayara Energy, the operator of the Vadinar Refinery in Gujarat, due to its 49% ownership by Russian oil giant Rosneft. The EU alleges that Nayara is refining Russian crude oil and indirectly supplying it to the European market—despite Nayara's claims that it processes oil only for domestic demand.
This move could have broader consequences for other Indian companies like Reliance, which also buy discounted Russian crude and export fuel to Europe. The ban may lead to reduced fuel exports from India and a dip in profits for major oil refiners.
In response, Nayara Energy has announced a massive ₹70,000 crore investment in India, signaling its commitment to the domestic market. The company currently operates over 6,800 fuel stations and controls 8% of India’s refining capacity and 7% of the retail fuel market.
The Indian government has stated that it does not recognize unilateral bans and that fulfilling the nation’s energy needs remains a top priority.
