Field growing maple bonsai trunks is one thing in particular.. Regular pruning of roots and branches to induce taper in the trunk and facilitate the development of a nice root spread where all roots are evenly sized.
Every two years or so ligt the trees. Prune back long branches and work on the roots to get a nicely tapered trunk.
