Air Force’s Air Battle Management System has been renamed Wakulda, a Worimi word from the Gathang language meaning ‘together’, during a Ceremony held at RAAF Base Williamtown on Friday 18 February 2022.
RAAF Base Williamtown is located on Worimi land, which extends from the Hunter River to the Manning River, and west to the Barringtons.
Worimi Elders endorsed using the word Wakulda, and are pleased to continue their close relationship with No. 41WG and RAAF Base Williamtown.
Formerly known as Vigilare, the Air Battle Management System (ABMS) integrates numerous ground radars and other sensor platforms to create a unified picture of Australia’s airspace for air battle management and command and control.
Changing its name to Wakulda better represents the system’s unique capability, highlights its role within a fifth-generation Air Force, and provides an opportunity for Defence to value local Indigenous culture.
