With President Park Geun-hye putting her political fate in the hands of the National Assembly during her third national televised address, the president's next move is likely to depend on whether lawmakers go on with the vote to impeach the president.
The opposition parties have been calling for an impeachment motion as the angry public voiced the commander-in-chief to step down from her post on the heels of a corruption political scandal involving the president's close confidante.
An impeachment motion will need to gain a two-third threshold at the 300 member legislature, making 28 votes from the ruling Saenuri Party crucial in passing the motion.
If the impeachment motion is passed, the Constitutional Court will conduct the presidential impeachment trial, the second in Korean history following the case of the late President Roh Moo-hyun.
The top court will have 180 days to make its final decision before a conviction can be confirmed.
Upon the conviction, a presidential election is to be held within 60 days.
But, if the impeachment motion fails to pass, law professors say it will be harder to face the public's anger.
Koreans have taken to the streets for the fifth Saturday in a row calling on the president to resign or to be impeached.
A record one-point-nine million people reportedly participated in the rally last weekend, but experts expect that figure to mount to three or even four million if the impeachment motion goes down the drain.
A coup is another legal way to take the president down other than an impeachment.
Only once did a head of state step down in Korea's history, when the country's founding President Rhee Syngman resigned in 1960 amid a popular uprising against his corrupt government.
