"Then we have this idea of a rishi, a seer, a sage, a teacher, a guide. There are many other terms for it: guru, acharya, and so on. A rishi is somebody who sees what others cannot see. He or she intuits the laws of this universe, the subtle laws that are hidden from our view, that underlie the workings of life, birth and death, rebirth. Not just human birth and death, but the birth and death of creatures and even universes. He or she, the Rishi, can see far into the future, into the realms that are hidden from our ordinary consciousness, consciousness of everyday life. Typically, a rishi is someone who codifies his or her discoveries in the form of a text, a shastra, that contains their insight and wisdom, which then gets passed on to future generations. There is no first rishi in Hinduism, nor there ever will be. Last rishis come and go according to their own karmas, always blessing the world with their wisdom."
