The government is rolling out a new Emergency Alerts system and a test alert will be sent at 3pm on Sunday 23 April. The alerts will be used to let you know about emergency situations (like severe flooding) through your mobile phone. However, the alert will be accompanied by a loud sound even if your phone is on silent. Here's how you can turn alerts off on Samsung phones if you use TalkBack to access your phone.
If you’re afraid of your partner our helpline team are here to support you. You can call them for free 24 hours a day on 0808 2000 247, or live chat with them Monday-Friday, 3-10pm by going to nationaldahelpline.org.uk.

This is a guide to turning off your emergency alerts on a Samsung phone with the use of talk back.
First, open your settings app. To find this, you can swipe two fingers ‘up’ from the bottom of the screen to the top of your phone screen. This should bring you to a home page with all your apps. Talk back should confirm where you are by saying ‘apps screen’.
While using talk back, you can tap your finger down anywhere on the screen to start hearing your apps read aloud. Move a finger around the screen to hear which app your finger is resting over. If settings isn’t on this first page of apps, you may need to use two fingers to swipe right to left on the phone screen, this will scroll over to the next page of apps. Once the settings app has been located, double tap anywhere on the screen to open the settings.
From here, find the option for ‘notifications’. Your talk back might say ‘notifications’ and also read to you your do not disturb status, this is normal. Tap and move your finger down the page to hear the options your finger is resting over. You may need to use two fingers to scroll down the page. To do this, place two fingers on the screen and move them from the bottom of the screen towards the top. Once ‘notifications’ has been found, double tap anywhere on the screen to open.
In the notifications menu you should find the option for ‘advanced settings’. Again, you may need to use two fingers to swipe from the bottom to the top of your phone screen, to scroll down the notifications page. Using talkback, tap and move your finger around the screen until you hear the option ‘advanced settings’. Double tap anywhere on the screen to open advanced settings.
Once in the advanced settings menu, find the option for ‘wireless emergency alerts’. Again, you can do this by taping on the screen and moving your finger up and down the menu to have the options read aloud to you. Once you’ve found wireless emergency alerts, double tap anywhere on the screen to open.
Now that you’re in your emergency alerts, you can check to see if emergency alerts are turned on, or off for this device. If you’re using talkback, tap and scroll your finger on your phone screen until you hear ‘allow alerts’. It should be one of the first options on the list. Once located, talk back should say ‘allow alerts’ and this should be followed by:
‘Receive emergency alert notifications on’ if your phone is set to receive emergency alerts, or ‘Receive emergency alert notifications, off’
If your alerts are on and you want to turn them off for your safety, double tap to change this setting from on, to off. To confirm you’ve made the switch you can move your finger around the screen and then return to this setting. You should hear talk back say ‘‘receive emergency alert notifications, off’.
This will have turned off both extreme and severe alerts. Options to turn off or on just one of these can be found further down the page.
