SITES "A Survey Method for Hazel Grouse" with Gunnar Jansson

Описание: SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science) is a national infrastructure for terrestrial and limnological field research. SITES aims to promote high-quality research through long-term field measurements and field experiments, and by making data and station access available to researchers, regardless of institution. The core of SITES is nine field research stations that represent a variety of Swedish climate zones and ecosystems, including agricultural land, forests, wetlands, lakes and streams.

In this video Gunnar Jansson, the SITES Station Manager at Grimsö Wildlife Research Station, presents a whistle survey method for monitoring hazel grouse (Bonasa bonasia) at the research station. The survey is conducted as territorial mapping in part of the research area, and the method includes the use of a whistle imitating the territorial song of a male hazel grouse. The large-scale and long-term survey of hazel grouse conducted at Grimsö is unique to Sweden and is rare internationally.

A typical hazel grouse habitat consists of dense spruce forest mixed with deciduous trees, preferably alder (Alnus spp.), and is threatened by traditional Swedish forest management, i.e. clearcutting regimes, tree thinning and coniferous monoculture. In the last decades, hazel grouse have shown a strong decline in southern Sweden, which is also mirrored in the Grimsö survey, likely related to Swedish forestry management. This highlights the importance of long-term and detailed data, which improves the understanding of causes and effects behind population trends.
