Описание: India and the European Union are on the verge of signing a landmark Free Trade Agreement at the India-EU Summit on January 27, 2026, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visiting as the chief guest for Republic Day.

The deal brings together nearly two billion people and almost a quarter of the global economy, covering goods, services, investments, digital trade, and supply chains. Negotiations had dragged on for years over tariffs, agriculture, and regulatory standards, but strategic urgency has now driven both sides to finalize the agreement.

For India, the FTA eliminates tariffs of 12–16% on textiles, along with duties on pharmaceuticals, electronics, gems and jewellery, leather, and auto components — giving Indian exporters a major advantage in the European market.

For the EU, the deal provides better access to India’s fast-growing consumer and services market, especially for machinery, chemicals, aircraft, high-value wines, diamonds, and professional services.

Sensitive sectors like agriculture — including dairy, rice, spices, and poultry — have been deliberately excluded to protect livelihoods and maintain regulatory standards, reflecting a pragmatic approach from both sides.

The agreement also liberalizes telecom, finance, e-commerce, and digital trade, facilitating Indian IT and services firms operating in Europe, while easing access for European tech companies in India.

Beyond economics, the FTA carries strong geopolitical significance. It reduces India’s dependence on China, diversifies supply chains, and provides a hedge against rising US protectionism. For the EU, India emerges as a reliable Indo-Pacific partner at a time of global trade fragmentation.

In an era of trade wars, tariffs, and shrinking globalization, the India-EU FTA signals a commitment to rules-based trade, strategic trust, and long-term economic alignment, marking India’s biggest trade diplomacy moment of the decade.
