If you were at home during the daylight hours of Wednesday, March 7, 1973, here is some of what you would have found in turning on your TV set. Soap operas mostly ruled the airwaves. Using my reel-to-reel taperecorder, I taped audio consisting of program themes and other snippets that day that I was able to pick up in northern New Hampshire. (NOTE: I first uploaded this on my channel four years ago, in February 2018. This re-upload is a bit of an upgrade. I went back to my original reel-to-reel recording, corrected the speed and did other minor tweaking. That original upload has garnered 4,332 visits as of this posting and remains up, with comments, on my channel.)
7 a.m. “CBS Morning News With John Hart and Nelson Benton.” Hart reports on the anniversary of the birth of Luther Burbank, the invention of the telephone, as well as news on the North and South Vietnamese release of prisoners of war exchange (CBS).
7:30 a.m. “Rocky And His Friends” cartoon (aired in local slot, WMTW, Poland Spring, Maine).
8 a.m. “Captain Kangaroo's Treasure House.” (CBS).
8:58 a.m. Commercial for “The Waltons” (CBS).
9 a.m. “The Mike Douglas Show” with co-host singer Don McLean. Includes segment of McLean singing “Vincent” (aired in local slot, WCAX, Burlington, Vt.).
9:30 a.m. “Channel 8's Morning Movie,” this morning featuring 1948 film “Force of Evil” starring John Garfield (aired in local slot, WMTW, Poland Spring, Maine).
11:30 a.m. “Love Of Life” (CBS).
12 noon “Where The Heart Is.” This was near the end of this daytime serial. The last episode aired on March 23, 1973, replaced by “The Young and the Restless” (CBS).
12:25 p.m. “The CBS Mid-Day News with Douglas Edwards” reports on Vietnamese prisoner exchange and news that New York Mayor John Lindsay will not seek reelection for a third term (CBS).
