Loch Vanachar, Loch Achray, and Loch Katrine are usually associated with climbing Ben A'an, one of the most beautiful little mountains in Scotland. All three lochs are visible from the top of it. Loch Vanachar is located between Callander and Brig o'Turk in the Trossachs. The road to Ben A'an car park leads along its banks for nearly all the way from Callander, and there are few car parks which serve as viewpoints to the loch's beautiful shores covered with the forest. The next loch is Achray, much smaller than the other two, but also wonderful, partially thanks to the Tigh Mor HPB property which adorns its northern shore with a castle-like 19th century building with small turrets and great facade and partially to Ben A'an shilluette which is rising above it. There are three small ponds on the other side of the road, across the hotel, whose purpose I don't know, so unless they are purely decorative, I would be grateful for some explanation. They surely look great from the drone. Over the southern bank of Loch Achray rises the dramatic shilluette of Ben Venue, a less famous but much higher mountain of this area. The car park for Ben A'an is located just a few hundred meters further from the hotel, and from there you can start an amazing family climb to the top of probably the most celebrated mountain of the Trossachs. Ben A'an is not terribly high, with only 461m, but the climb is quite steep, especially in the second half of the walk. Still, the usual visit to this peak takes less than 2 hours. We usually visit this mountain in spring as a training before the season, and this time we took an alternative circular path which is probably twice as long as normal trail - instead of coming back the same way to the car park as most people do, we took a path towards Loch Katrine, which leads down the boggy slope of this hill and further through charming (though still very boggy) forest down to the bank of the last loch on our list. Loch Katrine is the biggest and most beautiful of all three of them. Both ends of this loch are dotted with bigger and smaller islands covered with mighty trees. To see them up close, you can book a cruise along the shores of this amazing lake or rent a bike at the pier and ride many of the scenic trails of this area. We promised ourselves to come back to Loch Katrine again in late spring, when all the plants will be in full bloom.
