HILL: Mr. Carnegie, you have named the twelfth principle of the philosophy of individual achievement, Controlled Attention. Will you describe how this principle can be applied in the practical affairs of life?
CARNEGIE: Very well; let us take note, first of all, of the fact that Controlled Attention is directly related to all the previous eleven principles we have analyzed. As a matter of fact, there is a portion of each of these eleven principles combined with the principle of Controlled Attention.
From this you will observe that the proper approach to mastery of the principle of Controlled Attention is by mastery and application of the eleven principles previously covered.
Now let us define the term Controlled Attention, and make sure we understand exactly what it means. It is the act of combining all the faculties of the mind and concentrating them upon the attainment of a definite purpose. The time involved in the act of concentration of thought on a given subject depends upon the nature of the subject and upon that which one expects in connection with it.
Take my own case, for example. The dominating forces of my mind are, and have been for many years, concentrated upon the making and marketing of steel.
I have others allied with me who likewise concentrate their dominating thoughts upon the same objective. Thus we have the benefit of Controlled Attention in collective form, consisting, as it does, of the individual mind power of a great number of people, all working toward the same end, in a spirit of harmony.
