Want to give your crochet or knitted projects more structure and help them hold their shape? Here’s an easy way to stiffen them using starch!

What you’ll need:
• Starch
• Water
• A bowl
• A spray bottle
• A shape holder/form for your project

Method:

1. Boil some water. The quantity will depend on the size of your project.

2. In a separate bowl, mix 2 tbsp of starch with some cold water. Adjust the amount of starch depending on how stiff you want your project to be. Mix well until smooth.

3. Add the starch mixture to the boiling water and stir continuously until it combines well.

4. The solution may turn slightly whitish, so this method works best for lighter-coloured projects.

5. Let the solution cool slightly, then pour it into a spray bottle.

6. Place your crochet/knitted project over your desired shape holder. Make sure to place something underneath to protect your surface, or work outdoors.

7. Spray the starch solution generously over the entire project, making sure all the threads are thoroughly coated.

8. Leave the project to dry completely. For my crochet basket, 24 hours was enough.

9. Once completely dry, carefully remove it from the shape holder—and your project should now be stiff, structured, and able to hold its shape beautifully! ✨
