Box-to-Box Midfielder Analysis

A box to box midfielder meaning a center midfielder is in the middle of the team and wears the shirt number 8. Center midfielders are surrounded by the offense and defense of both teams and are shoulder-to-shoulder with the midfielders of the opposing team. Therefore, they must be skillful with the ball in the most congested portion of the field. They have similar scoring responsibilities to an attacking midfielder and similar goal-preventing responsibilities as a defensive midfielder.

They will also provide help when defending set pieces and must be able to tackle properly to dispossess the other team. Because of having responsibilities on both sides of the ball, the box-to-box midfielders often have the most endurance on the team. A center midfielder is an important starting-point of attack for a team. Center midfielders tend to be “playmakers” who distribute the ball to the attacking players after having moved it past most of the midfielders and some defenders.

It is vital that they have exceptional passing skills and great vision of the field to understand the movements of their teammates and the opposing team too. When attacking, they often take shots from outside the 18-yard box to help their team score. Since a considerable amount of the game occurs in their portion of the field, midfielders often exert the greatest influence over a match.
