This is a lecture I gave on 6/16/2013 in the Study Group - Kyu room on KGS on the topic of handicap go. In it, I go over two professional handicap games, with an amateur (2dan vs 3kyu) game in the middle to give us a good idea of how NOT to play a handicap game as black against a stronger player.
Of the two professional games, one has the young Takemiya Masaki and the other with the young Kato Masao (both twelve years old at the time), taking 4 and 5 stones respectively against their teachers. Even in their youth, you can clearly see the beginnings of their unique styles. Best of all, we have both Takemiya's and Kato's own words from decades later to both critique their younger selves and provide us with insights into their thinking at the time.
This lecture was designed for those between AGA 10kyu-1kyu. Those outside this range may find some of the material useful, but those within it will definitely get the most out of it.
Some of the material for this lecture was taken from "Masterpieces of Handicap Go", Volume 1, Second Edition.
Love to hear feedback or ideas for the future!
