The Islamic world faced annihilation. In the 13th century, the Mongols erupted from the Eurasian steppe, destroying the Khwarazmian Empire and sweeping through Persia, Central Asia, and Iraq. Cities fell. Baghdad burned. The Abbasid Caliphate collapsed.
Yet from the ashes, a new power emerged. The Mamluks of Egypt overthrew the Ayyubids, halted the Mongol advance at ʿAyn Jālūt, and reshaped the political and military balance of the Middle East. They would go on to weaken the remaining Crusader states and restore a measure of stability to the region.
This is Part 4 of a 5-part series tracing 1444 years of Islamic civilization from its birth.
