Painting a Rose Dapple Gray Model Horse

Materials and Tools You’ll Need For Painting

Start with a fully prepped and ready to paint model.
Reference photos! I like to print out my reference photos and tape them to my paint booth, so I can see them at a glance as I paint.
Always with safety in mind, use a respirator, eye protection, skin protection and ventilation. An airbrush booth is wonderful to have as it pulls overspray paint away from you with a fan through a filter. There are inexpensive setups readily available online.
Airbrush and compressor. I’m using an Iwata HP-C and an Iwata Micron CM-B, with an Iwata Studio Series Power Jet Pro. compressor. A compressor with a tank, regulator and moisture trap works best as you can control the air flow pressure with the regulator, the tank gives you an even air flow and the moisture trap prevents water in your lines caused by condensation.
Acrylic airbrush paints (suggested brands: Com-Art Medea, Golden High Flow, Liquitex, Createx, Badger, Jo Sonja). Airbrush paints are preferable to tube paints as the pigments are so finely ground and designed to go through an airbrush with minimal clogging. Tube paints can be used though so experiment and see what you prefer.
Colors and mediums used for this model will be Liquitex soft body titanium white, Liquitex soft body unbleached titanium (formerly known as beige), Golden Hi Flow titanium white, Golden Titan Buff, Com-Art Medea burnt sienna, Com-Art Medea raw umber, Badger black and Golden retarder. In addition:
Duplicolor Sandable Primer (gray or white)
6 x 6 piece of cardboard or mat board.
White paper towels, and some lint free shop towels are a plus.
Cotton swabs.
Eye Dropper
cup of clean water to thin paint and another for dirty water, for flushing your airbrush.
Fine detail brush and a small filbert brush for eyes and markings.
Optional: pastel chalks or pan pastels, colored pencils.
Satin or matte sealer. I use Winsor Newton Professional varnish
