Media misuse in Nepal has manifested in various forms, including the dissemination of misinformation, online abuse, and challenges related to social media platforms.
Misinformation and Its Consequences
A notable instance occurred in 2000 when Channel Nepal falsely attributed anti-Nepal remarks to Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan. This misinformation incited riots, resulting in four deaths and 180 injuries. The incident underscored the profound impact of erroneous media reports on public order.

Similarly, during the investigation of Nirmala Panta's rape and murder in 2018, local media played a controversial role. Khem Bhandari, publisher and chief editor of 'Manaskhanda,' was accused of sensationalizing the case and disseminating misleading information, which fueled public protests and social media trials against individuals. Bhandari was later convicted of defamation and interfering with court procedures.

Online Abuse and Cybercrime
The rise of social media has led to increased cases of online abuse in Nepal. In the fiscal year 2022/23, the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police reported 635 cases of children facing cyber abuse, with over 81% of these incidents occurring on Facebook. -MY REPUBLICA
The misuse of platforms like TikTok has also been a concern. Between 2019 and 2023, more than 1,600 TikTok-related cybercrime cases were registered in Nepal. In response, the government temporarily banned the app in November 2023, citing its negative impact on social harmony. The ban was lifted in August 2024 after TikTok agreed to collaborate with local authorities to address these issues. - REUTERS
Regulatory Measures
To combat misinformation and regulate online content, Nepal introduced a social media bill in January 2025. The bill proposes penalties, including up to five years in prison and fines up to Rs1.5 million, for individuals spreading false information through fake profiles. This legislative effort aims to curb the misuse of social media platforms and protect public interests. - KATHMANDU POST
These instances highlight Nepal's challenges in balancing media freedom with the need to prevent misuse and protect individuals from the adverse effects of misinformation and online abuse.
