When Astronauts Forget Gravity 🌍

Without gravity pulling blood and fluids downward, liquids shift toward the head and upper body. Muscles that normally support posture and movement are used far less, and bones begin to lose density because they are no longer carrying weight.

The cardiovascular system also changes. On Earth, the heart constantly works against gravity to keep blood flowing to the brain when a person stands up. In space, this challenge disappears, so the heart and blood vessels become less responsive. Over time, the body’s ability to quickly regulate blood pressure weakens.

When astronauts return to Earth, gravity immediately affects the body again. Blood pools in the legs, blood pressure can drop when standing, and less blood may reach the brain. This often causes dizziness, weakness, blurred vision, and sometimes fainting, especially during the first hours or days after landing.

Balance is another major challenge. The inner ear relies on gravity to help determine orientation and movement. After long exposure to microgravity, the brain needs time to relearn what is up and down. Astronauts may feel unsteady, misjudge distances, or use too much or too little force when moving or lifting objects.

Interestingly, even experienced astronauts can struggle with these effects after every long mission. That is why they are supported immediately after landing and begin rehabilitation right away. With time, exercise, and training, the body adapts back to Earth’s gravity and normal balance, strength, and blood pressure control gradually return.
