IAEA makes a ‘Big Statement’ as Israel strikes Iran’s key nuclear infrastructure amid West Asia war

Описание: The International Atomic Energy Agency on March 29 made a big statement after Israeli strikes on Iran’s Khondab Heavy Water Plant. The IAEA confirmed that Khondab Heavy Water Plant has sustained severe damage and is no longer operational following the strikes. In a post on X, IAEA said its assessment was based on independent analysis of satellite imagery & technical knowledge of the facility. The Khondab Heavy Water Plant is situated in Iran's Arak city and is also referred to as the Arak Nuclear Complex. It has long been a focal point of international concern due to its potential role in nuclear development. Earlier IDF on March 27 confirmed that it carried out the strike, describing the plant as a key component in Iran's nuclear infra. According to the IDF, the plant produces heavy water, a substance used in certain types of nuclear reactors including the Arak reactor. Israeli Defense forces also claimed that the plant was originally designed with the capability to produce weapons-grade plutonium. Israel also alleged that despite int’l commitments Iran had not fully converted the reactor to prevent plutonium production. It also claimed that repeated reconstruction efforts at the site had been identified following earlier strikes. The developments come amid heightened tensions in the region, with increasing scrutiny over Iran's nuclear activities. US President Donald Trump on multiple occasions has said that he ordered strikes on Iran to stop its nuclear program. The war, launched on Feb 28 with U.S., Israeli strikes on Iran, entered into its second month and has spread across the Middle East. Meanwhile, Iran maintains a chokehold on Gulf oil and gas shipments and continues missile and drone strikes across the region
