As I write this is it April 2020 and the U.K. is in lockdown due to the dreadful COVID-19 epidemic. This time at home has given me a chance to reflect and revisit some of the music I love—such as these five preludes by Heitor Villa-Lobos. The five preludes are iconic pieces in the classical guitar repertoire and they bring me many happy memories. They have been in my life since I was a teenager, and I performed them several times in my early twenties. It has been fun and challenging to resurrect Villa-Lobos’ preludes over the past few weeks and I hope you enjoy my renditions.
Villa-Lobos did not intend for the preludes to be played as a suite in any particular order and I find that the order 3, 5, 1, 4, and 2, works quite well. This performance is dedicated to my friend Ian Kelleher who enjoyed playing them in the order 1, 3, 5, 4, and 2! I guess it's all down to personal choice and what works for you. Who knows—I may change the order again in the future!
The guitar I’m playing was made by Philip Woodfield in 1998. You'll notice a couple of microphones in the video; the one on the bottom left is an AKG C1000 and the one on the right is a Neumann KM184. I also used a room microphone (SE Electronics).
