In August 1990, Matt Mattox was one of the featured jazz dance pioneers invited to teach jazz dance at the World Jazz Dance Congress, held at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. In this excerpt from the documentary "The Jazz Dance Jigsaw" Mattox demonstrates principles of his Freestyle Jazz Dance technique.
**Note from Bob Boross - I disagree with the statement in the video that Matt's technique and style is "strongly influenced by Oriental principles of movement." Matt's work is most strongly based in his ballet technique and his isolations stemming from the influence of Jack Cole. There are a few exercises that will replicate Cole's East Indian flavored movement, but overall the East Indian influence in Matt's work is minimal.
Bob Boross was associated with Matt Mattox for over twenty years as a student, dancer in his choreography, and as Matt's biographer. Bob teaches the Mattox technique throughout the country in guest residencies, workshops, and university dance courses.**
