There are ten thousand versions of "Blackbird" on YouTube. Most of them are note-for-note copies. This one isn't.
Paul McCartney was twenty-six when he wrote this song in 1968, watching the civil rights movement from across the Atlantic. He took a fingerpicking pattern from Bach, turned it into something about broken wings and waiting for the moment to arise, and recorded it in one take with just a guitar. That simplicity is what makes the song immortal.
I'm seventy-seven. After sixty years of playing guitar, I'm not interested in copying anyone's version note for note. The melody is here. The words are here. The chromatic bass line that IS the song - that's here. But the feel, the spaces, the dynamics - that's my lifetime of playing talking. This is "Blackbird" the way I hear it now.

🎵 BLACKBIRD (1968)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Written by Lennon-McCartney. Paul McCartney wrote it alone, inspired by the civil rights movement and built on a fingerpicking pattern from Bach's Bourrée in E minor. Recorded in one take at Abbey Road - just McCartney and his Martin D-28. The blackbird is a Black woman. The broken wings are oppression. "You were only waiting for this moment to arise."
MY ARRANGEMENT:
• Key: G major (chromatic ascending bass preserved)
• Tempo: Free/rubato (~84-92 BPM, breathing with the phrases)
• Style: Fingerpicking - rooted in the original but with my own voicings and dynamics
• What's different: Slower, more contemplative pace. Wider dynamic range. More space between phrases. Fuller chord voicings where McCartney used single notes. Played on a Taylor Sinker Redwood for a warmer, deeper tone.
WHY MY OWN VERSION:
McCartney didn't write "Blackbird" as a museum piece. He took Bach's technique and made it his own. The whole point of the song is transformation - taking what you've been given and making something new. After sixty years of guitar, that's exactly what I'm doing here.
