A visit to Nakijin Castle Ruins (今帰仁城), located on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa, about 90 km from Naha. Many thanks to our friend Miki-san for kindly taking us there.
Nakijin Castle, also known as Hokuzan Castle, was a Ryūkyūan gusuku fortification and the capital of the Hokuzan Kingdom during the late 14th century, when Okinawa was divided into three principalities: Hokuzan (north), Chūzan (central), and Nanzan (south). The castle served as the seat of the King of Hokuzan.
Protected as a National Historic Site since 1972, Nakijin Castle Ruins were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as part of the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu. Today, the site is also known for its Hikan cherry blossoms, which bloom from mid-January to early February, marking the first cherry blossoms of the year in Japan.
