Since it's thicker than a turning chain, it prevents gaping at the edges of your projects. I've also found it makes my edges straighter, crisper, and more defined. In this video, I first show how to use this technique for double crochet, and then show how it can be adapted for shorter stitches, like single crochet, or taller stitches, like triple/treble crochet.
