Richard Wagner's last opera, Parsifal, is nearly five hours long and features some of his most incredible music. Although the work is mostly known as an opera, Wagner himself called it "Ein Bühnenweihfestspiel", which is best described as a "festival play for the consecration of a stage". Based on 'Parzival', a 13th-century epic poem, it tells the story of Percival, one of King Arthur's knights, and his quest to find the Holy Grail. Between the first and second scenes of Act I is the orchestral interlude 'Verwandlungsmusik', or 'Transformation Music'. Wagner had written the music to accompany the shifting of scenes, and it has now become one of his most commonly performed works, being extracted from the opera as a concert piece. Stradal's arrangement of the orchestral interlude attempts to capture the majesty and richness of the original piece with only the singular sound of the piano, with a heavy use of the sustain pedal and beautifully twinkling tremolo passages.
