1979: CARMINE GALANTE — THE CIGAR IN HIS MOUTH WHEN HE DIED
July 12th, 1979, 2:40 PM. Joe & Mary's Restaurant, Brooklyn.
Carmine "Lilo" Galante sat in the back patio garden finishing lunch with his bodyguards.
He was 69 years old. Boss of the Bonanno crime family. One of the most violent mobsters in New York.
He'd just eaten pasta and wine. And he was smoking his trademark cigar.
"Lilo" meant "cigar" in Sicilian. He was never without one.
Three men wearing ski masks burst through the door.
A shotgun blast hit Carmine Galante directly in the face.
He died instantly. Fell backward. Hit the ground.
And the cigar—that trademark cigar—remained clenched between his teeth even in death.
The crime scene photograph became the most famous mob death image in history:
Carmine Galante lying on his back, face destroyed, eyes open, blood everywhere, and a fat cigar still in his mouth.
He'd been killed so quickly, so violently, that he died before the cigar could fall.
This is the story of "Lilo"—the mob boss who built a billion-dollar heroin empire and died with his signature cigar in his mouth.
