The roach is a zerg ground unit in StarCraft II.Roaches evolved from the fast-healing zantar slug of Garrxax, their ranged acid saliva attack is capable of penetrating neosteel and armor, and violently dissolving flesh on multiple entry points.Due to their heavy armor, roaches are unable to aim their acid at aerial targets. If pressed into close quarters, roaches use scythe-like blades on their backs to dispatch the enemy. The hardness of these scythes allows roaches to scythe through neosteel and armor with ease. The roach's metabolism is ten times greater than that of the zantar slug (increased through assimilation), and gained the ability to quickly regenerate even the most grievous wounds when burrowed. The absorption of soil compounds, especially rare earths and metals, has allowed roaches to develop extremely thick carapaces. One on one, few are capable of taking on a roach and winning.
During the Second Great War, Abathur attempted to improve the evolutions of the Zerg Swarm, and sought out various opportunities for this, including unique adaptations of feral zerg, wild animals with useful biological traits, and abandoned zerg breeds that could be reclaimed for the Swarm. However, due to conflicts between the potential mutations he discovered, only one could be permanently assimilated into the Swarm, while the other would be discarded. Sarah Kerrigan ordered Abathur to make limited groups of either mutation for her to field test them in battle, then and made the personal decision of which to keep.
Evolution missions are a gameplay mechanic in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. They are optional missions the player may complete to upgrade specific zerg strains. They are accessed through the evolution pit.
