🌕 Karthika Pournami Giripradakshina at Kotappakonda
Kotappakonda, also known as Trikoota Parvatham, is a sacred hill dedicated to Lord Shiva (Sri Trikoteswara Swamy) located near Narasaraopet in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. The hill has three peaks representing the Trimurtis – Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara – and is one of the most revered Shaiva Kshetras in South India.
🔱 Significance of Karthika Pournami
Karthika Pournami, the full moon day in the holy month of Karthikam, holds immense religious importance for devotees of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva’s divine energy and blessings are at their peak on this day. Lighting lamps, performing abhishekams, and undertaking spiritual austerities bring immense merit (punya).
On this auspicious day, thousands of devotees from across Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states visit Kotappakonda to perform Giripradakshina, an act of great devotion and penance.
🚶♂️ Giripradakshina at Kotappakonda
Giripradakshina means circumambulating the sacred hill — walking around it in a clockwise direction while chanting Lord Shiva’s name.
Devotees start the pradakshina, usually at night or before dawn, covering a path of approximately 7–8 kilometers around the base of the hill.
Many carry oil lamps (deepams) in their hands or on their heads, creating a breathtaking scene of lights encircling the hill under the full moon.
The entire path resonates with Har Har Mahadev and Om Namah Shivaya chants, filling the atmosphere with divine vibrations.
🌸 Spiritual Beliefs
Performing Giripradakshina on Karthika Pournami is said to wash away sins, remove obstacles, and bring peace and prosperity.
The lamp (deepam) symbolizes inner enlightenment, and circumambulating the sacred Kotappakonda hill represents moving around the cosmic center – Lord Shiva Himself.
It is also believed that those who complete the Giripradakshina with faith will be blessed with good health, success, and spiritual growth.
🔥 Rituals and Festivities
Fasting and purification before the pradakshina.
Lighting of thousands of lamps along the pathways and temples.
Abhishekam, Archana, and Deepa Aradhana to Lord Trikoteswara Swamy.
Devotees visit the Trikoteswara Temple on the hilltop after completing the pradakshina for Darshan and Prasadam.
The night view of Kotappakonda, illuminated by countless lamps under the full moon, is a truly divine spectacle.
✨ Essence
Karthika Pournami Giripradakshina at Kotappakonda is a journey of faith, devotion, and surrender. Every step taken around the hill is believed to draw devotees closer to Lord Trikoteswara Swamy, purifying the body and mind while kindling the inner light of wisdom.
