Time Trial Report

Olympic silver medallist Abraham Olano, one of the Tour de France favourites, finally came up trumps when he won the penultimate stage time trial on Saturday.
The Spaniard, disappointing in the mountains, was 45 seconds faster than Jan Ullrich of Germany, who nevertheless extended his overall lead to nine minutes nine seconds on the eve of his crowning as champion in Paris.

French time trial specialist Philippe Gaumont was third 1:12 behind Olano.

Olano, who has struggled to fulfil Spanish expectations since five times Tour champion Miguel Indurain retired, was not quite fast enough to snatch third place overall after the 63-km time trial at Disneyland.

Italian Marco Pantani hung on for a place on the Champs Elysees podium despite a puncture. He finished 4:35 behind.

Olano, runner-up to Indurain in the Atlanta Games time trial last year, overtook compatriot Fernando Escartin in the standings and said afterwards: ``A fourth place augurs well for future Tours.''

He said the Tour had favoured the climbers. Apart from Ullrich and himself the top places were taken by mountain specialists -- Virenque, Pantani, Escartin and Italian Francesco Casagrande.

``The climbers have had many more possibilities. This Tour has been disadvantageous to a racer like me,'' Olano said.

Richard Virenque of France retained second place after finishing ninth, just managing to avoid being overtaken on the course by Ullrich for the second successive time trial.

The German was more than three minutes faster than Virenque when he won the St Etienne 12th stage time trial eight days ago.

Ullrich said he was tired because he had not been allowed enough sleep with an ever increasing demand for interviews since taking the yellow jersey. ``I'm happy to have kept the jersey safe,'' he said.

The ever modest Ullrich said the race was not yet won. ``You've got to be on your guard on the Champs Elysees.''

Defending champion Bjarne Riis was unable to shake off the bad luck that has plagued his Tour.

Riis, who lost ground when he was unwell in the Alps, had to change a wheel and then his bike in the opening section, falling more than five seconds behind and finally coming in 93rd, 9:12 adrift.

The Dane threw his bike into the grass verge in disgust when he realised he needed a second change.

The Telekom team's assistant manager Rudy Pevenage said: ``The bike was okay on previous days but something was wrong today and the mechanic tried to fix it on the (starting) podium.

``Then Bjarne had a puncture and when I gave him a push to start again the chain came off.''

Riis remained seventh overall -- 26:34 behind.
