Maritime security is a critical topic for the UPSC exam, covering the protection of a nation's waters, trade routes, resources, and coastal areas from threats like piracy, terrorism, smuggling, and environmental hazards. Given India's extensive 7,516 km coastline and significant dependence on sea trade (over 90% by volume), it is a vital component of national security and economic stability.
Importance of Maritime Security for India
Economic Lifeline: Over 90% of India's trade volume moves by sea. Secure Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOCs) are essential for uninterrupted imports (especially oil and gas) and exports, underpinning economic growth.
National Security: The 2008 Mumbai terror attacks highlighted vulnerabilities from the sea. Robust coastal security prevents infiltration, arms/drug smuggling, and maritime terrorism.
Resource Security (Blue Economy): Security is essential to safely harness marine resources within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), including fisheries, offshore oil and gas, and seabed minerals.
Geostrategic Influence: India positions itself as a "net security provider" in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). A strong maritime presence allows for regional stability, diplomacy, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
