Many a Northern town contributed to the shape of the world as we know it, be it through coal, steel, steam, canals, these industries that were once a sturdy backbone to Britain are now crumbling columns of eras gone by.
Our intention with this mural was to celebrate Doncaster remarkable historic past in industry whilst manifesting a future of creativity and diversity. We wanted to pay our respects to the Windrush generation that arrived in Doncaster and contributed so much. To pay our dues to the coal miners of the area of which my own grandad worked. We embraced nature and where possible tried to enhance it. The need for trees is more prevalent than ever as we have crossed into an era of climate change and a push towards lower carbon emissions.
We liked the idea that the most positive/silver linings to the times we have been living in is nature reclaiming its place, we feel it’s a sentiment people clung to during the Covid. Many people have needed the great outdoors to transcend out of their pandemic realities. Doncaster has an abundance of nature accessible to most on foot/public transport and the importance of green space and living things cannot be overlooked. The horses signify the equestrian history of Doncaster as much as they do freedom and power and the bond between human and habitat. As we have harnessed the power of nature to advance us in industry we in turn need to give back.
There are so many subject matters in this that we want to expand on but for now this brief summary hopefully shines somewhat of a light!
