CROWDS, TRAFFIC, WATER, CLIMBING…BUT I GOT MT SHOT !
My name is Ed Anderson, and I live in the quaint, potato-planting-less village of Apopka, Florida. Centuries ago, with possibly a humorous glint in their eyes, the indigenous folks named our little settlement Ahopka, meaning “the place of potato eaters.” We have many nurseries, even a mushroom factory, but zero potato patches. Go figure…
Despite the lack of potatoes, my passion lies in capturing the extraordinary, and this was my mission to photograph La Maison Rose in Montmartre, France.
As I stood on the bustling streets of Montmartre, France, my intentions were crystal clear: to capture the essence of La Maison Rose café in a way that had never been done before. The charming pink façade of the café had lured me here, promising a photograph that would stand out among the countless images that had already been taken.
But my barriers were demanding. The streets were teeming with tourists with a colorful tapestry of languages and cultures that made navigating the crowds feel like threading a needle in a whirlwind. The light was rapidly fading, casting a magnificent golden glow over everything, making my mission all the more challenging and exciting.
As I made my way through the picturesque streets I reminisced on how vibrant Paris was: a sensory explosion, a symphony of sights, tastes, sounds, smells, and sensations. The scent of freshly baked croissants wafted through the air, mixing with the rich aroma of coffee brewing in quaint cafés. The echoes of street musicians and the chatter of locals filled the atmosphere with a lively melody. Cobblestone streets exuded history, each step a connection to the artists and thinkers who had wandered these very paths before me.
But there was disaster looming. Just as I was about to set up my shot, a street cleaner suddenly appeared, spraying water with reckless abandon. I leaped back, narrowly avoiding a soaking that would have drenched both me and my precious camera.
And then, there was La Maison Rose – a historical gem with a tale of its own. Legend had it that the café had been a gathering place for artists and writers during the Belle Époque, a haven of inspiration and creativity. It had witnessed the musings of Picasso, the laughter of Hemingway, and the dreams of countless romantics. The walls seemed to whisper stories of the past, and as I gazed at its pink façade, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the history it held.
With renewed determination, I set up my camera, adjusting the settings to capture the fading light just right. My mentor, Serge Ramelli, remarked “Ed, let me check your settings. We don’t want to miss this once in a lifetime shot.” The colors danced on the scene reflected in the camera viewer, and I knew I had captured the perfect moment. Just as I lowered my camera, the last rays of sunlight slipped behind the horizon, leaving a dusky twilight in their wake.
Had I done it? The image in the camera said yes, but one never knows until the photo is downloaded and viewed large screen.
Was it in focus? Did I capture all of the important elements? Was the light right? Then ....
Voila! I had captured La Maison Rose like no image I had ever seen before, despite the odds against me. The image was my masterpiece. Literally a dream come true allowing me to feel contentedly connected to the heart and soul of France.
And so, my hero's journey reached its peak on the vibrant streets of Montmartre. I had faced the barriers, embraced the sensory wonders of Paris, and triumphed over adversity. With the image of La Maison Rose etched into my camera and my memories, I walked away from this adventure with a heart full of pride and a newfound sense of accomplishment.
