Not all projects are winners.

We wanted to change the look of our bathtub, but did not want to go through the expense or difficulty of ripping it out. Instead I decided to try painting it. I had heard of other people doing so. I watched four or five different youtube videos that showed people having good results painting their tub with the same Rust-Oleum tub+tile kit that I found at the local big box home store. So I decided to try.

I was not expecting perfect results. I knew it would not look as good as new. But we wanted to get rid of the brown, and we figured that if this gave us 3-5 years, then we would be satisfied.

Unfortunately, we were more than a bit disappointed with the results.

The results were kind of tolerable. Maybe even almost “okay”. Maybe. But not good or great. I would not say we were happy. (UPDATE TWO MONTHS LATER: It's peeling. )

Our complaints include:
The kit claims to cover 100 square feet with two coats. It did not.
The kit claims that two coats (i.e.: ONE kit) is enough to do the average tub. In our opinion there is no way that one kit was enough. In fact, I’m not even sure that two kits (4 coats on almost everything) is enough.
It took far longer to harden/cure than promised. It is supposed to dry in 36 hrs and be ready for use in 3 days. I found that in 3 days it felt dry but still pulled fibres from my jeans when I sat on the edge of the tub.
The paint is VERY thin, like painting with milk, and when painting with a brush it runs very easily.
The instructions recommend spraying or brushing, and recommend AGAINST using a roller — even though one of the youtube videos we found was FROM the manufacturer and featured the use of a roller. I think a roller performed better, but I would suggest that you try spraying if you can.
Because we needed more than one kit, we are also spending more than expected.

Like I said, it’s looking better than it did as a brown tub, but I can’t really recommend this method to anyone.

I really wish I'd just used the roller right from the start. I think that would have worked better for this product.

PLEASE NOTE:
I mentioned John Heisz at one point, saying that he had also painted his tub.
This is true; however I found out later that he had used a different product. John had used a kit from “Kenk’s”, sold at Home hardware here in Canada. He also sprayed his tub.

ALSO: I'm located in Canada. The product I bought was also from Canada. A few commenters have pointed out that the US product is different and has different instructions. I wish I'd known that before hand.
