One year after a burst water pipe triggered a massive sinkhole beneath Godstone High Street, the road is still shut.
On 17 February 2025, part of this Surrey village quite literally collapsed, exposing a network of old Victorian sand mines beneath the surface. Residents were evacuated. Businesses lost trade. The repair bill has hit £3 million.
Surrey County Council say the high street will reopen in spring. But for shop owners and locals who have lived with diversions, disruption and uncertainty for 12 months, that still feels a long way off.
