Join us for this interview with René Gerrets, associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam and senior fellow at the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development. Drawing on a prior career in laboratory-based biomedical research, René earned a PhD in social anthropology at New York University. His PhD thesis investigated the rise of 'partnership' as both a dominant ideology and organizational model in the domain of global health, drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted among a US Centers for Disease Control-spearheaded malaria drug trial in rural Tanzania. Also anchored in Tanzania, his subsequent research examined the social scientific and governance aspects of infectious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, and the contemporary traces and echoes of colonial-era biomedical interventions.
This interview is part of the Amsterdam Anthropologies Series, our departmental seminar at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Each session dedicates an afternoon to exploring groundbreaking research and celebrating contributions to our (in)discipline through academic talks, ethnographic exhibits, and conversations with leading scholars.
