(2 Oct 2019) A memorial was held on Wednesday for Jamal Khashoggi near the Saudi Arabia's Consulate in Istanbul where he entered a year ago to collect documents and never came out.
The memorial began just after 1:14 p.m. (1014 GMT), the time that Khashoggi - a Washington Post columnist - walked into the consulate to pick up documents required for him to marry his Turkish fiancée, who was waiting for him outside.
Among activists and friends who gathered to demand justice for Khashoggi on the first-year anniversary of his horrific death at the hands of Saudi agents was Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos.
He praised Hatice Cengiz, who paced the street outside the Saudi consulate for hours, waiting for him to re-emerge.
During the ceremony, human rights and media freedoms activists called for a comprehensive United Nations investigation into the murder and action to ensure that the perpetrators of the killing don't go unpunished.
Also amongst attendees to the commemoration were UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial Executions Agnes Callamard, as well as Amnesty International's Senior Researcher of Turkey, Andrew Gardner.
