Rondevlei - Last Flight For 2025

Описание: Rondevlei Nature Reserve delivered the perfect closing scene for 2025.

As the year took its final glide, I headed to the Hide for one last birding session not too far from home. With water levels lower than usual, the vlei welcomed an influx of waders, including the well-camouflaged African Snipe and the elusive Baillon’s Crake - which I sadly missed after it rewarded a few patient birders before my arrival.

Though the Snipe was visible only as a distant binocular sighting on an overcast day, the reeds and muted tones of the wetland painted a classic birder’s moment - raw, subtle, and beautifully wild. While the light wasn’t ideal for photography, the morning still gifted me memorable encounters: a juvenile Purple Heron, Reed Cormorants, Reed Cormorants, and a Pied Kingfisher defying gravity in a hover before signing off 2025 with a striking dive.

No trophies, no perfect lighting - just the joy of local wetlands, wild wings, and the kind of mornings that remind us why we explore. The real award was the atmosphere: a thriving wetland, shared excitement, and great conversations with passionate birders on the final day of the year.

A satisfying end. A grateful goodbye to 2025. And an open sky ahead for 2026.
