Tascam Portastudio four track Cassette player analog mix down to a Otari MX 5050 B2 Professional Master recorder. The master stems are being mixed down to stereo on 1/4" tape.
Is this overkill? It most certainly is.
Mixing is done internally on the Tascam 414 mkII, and it comes out as stereo pairs.
I ran the line outputs from the 414 into the line inputs on the 5050. Then I carefully set the levels for each track of the Tascam, including the levels for the master volume. Now I have a volume level with which I can set the input levels for the Otari line ins.
(The outputs of the Otari run straight into my sound card, which is running at 16bit/48K).
The first real-time mix you hear is from the Sel-Sync head, also known as the record head.
The second mix toward the end of the video is from the Reproduce / Playback head. For this pass, all the camera audio is edited out and what you hear is the stereo digital master (48k, 16bit).
The quarter inch tape is Scotch 206. The cassette is the recommended Maxell XL II, (type 2, High bias tape).
Good luck and have fun with your Portastudio!
The Song is an original of mine.
