The Most Epic Utah Camping Living in Our Van

Trying to find a place to camp in Moab can feel like a treasure hunt… and this week, it definitely tested our patience.

We rolled into Moab excited for a few days of desert camping, but quickly ran into finding closed campsites, and the spots we hoped to stay in just weren’t an option anymore. After a lot of driving, second-guessing maps, and wondering if we’d actually find anywhere to land, we finally stumbled across something incredible.

Perched right on the edge of the desert, we found a completely free campsite overlooking Canyonlands National Park, and the views were unreal. Towering cliffs, endless canyon layers, and the kind of quiet you only get in the middle of the desert.

Over the next couple of days we slowed down, soaked in the views, and even baked fresh sourdough bread right over a campfire. It was one of those campsites that reminds us exactly why we live this way.

But the adventure didn’t stop there.

We packed up our van and headed for one of the most famous (and intimidating) roads in the area, the legendary Shafer Trail. Tight switchbacks, massive drop-offs, and jaw-dropping views made for one wild ride as we carefully navigated the van down into the canyon.

From campsite struggles to one of the most epic desert drives in the Southwest, this week in Moab had a little bit of everything.
