The singer’s family confirmed his death in a statement to Variety. “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life…After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025. We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.” (Variety)

He was the savior of soul in the nineties and the debut album of D'Angelo,Brown Sugar, is arguably the best soul recording of the hip-hop era. Sexy and smooth and yet nice and raw as well. Due in part to his enthralling concerts, D'Angelo built up a faithful following who impatiently waited for five years for his next successful album, Voodoo. Although he gave a legendary concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2000, nothing more happened for a long time. That is until last winter when rumors about D'Angelo began to fly. He was said to be working on a new album and to be coming to Amsterdam. The strength of the man's reputation after twelve years of inactivity was proven by the high speed at which his shows in Paradiso sold out. If you missed out on a ticket, you can see him at North Sea Jazz. And for everyone who was at Paradiso, we'll see you too, because history has taught us that once you see D'Angelo live you can't wait to see him again!
