Shaped in collaboration with eight Indigenous consulting curators, the #PennMuseum’s new Native North America Gallery explores the political, religious, linguistic, and artistic self-determination of Native peoples across the United States who are still thriving—despite attempts to erase their Indigenous identity, cultures, and languages.
Native-led perspectives through more than 250 archaeological, historic, and contemporary items in the Museum's North American collections add nuance and complexity to the nation’s story as it approaches its 250th year.
In the coming weeks, we’ll spotlight the stories of Indigenous curators, cultural specialists, and artists through a cultural item and a contemporary work from each of the four regions represented in the gallery. Follow along.
