"Simple Man" by Graham Nash was released on the album 'Songs for Beginners". It's a love song about the his high profile relationship with Joni Mitchell from 1968 to 1970. The relationship began after they met and they quickly became inseparable, with Nash leaving The Hollies to move in with her in Laurel Canyon, where their home became a hub for musicians and the birthplace of 'Crosby, Stills & Nash'.
However the relationship ended in 1970 with Mitchell sending a telegram to Nash who was touring Europe with the message "If you hold sand too tightly in your hand, it will run through your fingers".
Both artists continued to be inspired by the relationship. Mitchell's album 'Blue' includes the songs "River" and "A Case of You" that reflected their time together. Nash's bandmate Neil Young also wrote "Only Love Can Break Your Heart." to help Nash through the heartbreak.
