After alighting the Netravati Express at Cherthala (SRTL), I took a rickshaw to my Hometown, Kumarakom 15 kms away. On the way falls the massive Vembanad Lake across which a 1.2 km long water regulator (sort of a dam) has been built.
Called the Thannermukkom bund, this salt water regulator is India's largest and divides the Vembanad Lake in to two zones. The job of this regulator is to keep salt water from entering the lake. This is because the lakes' water is used for farming in the area across the bund. If salt water enters the lake, it will ruin the paddy filed and the crops.
As for the Vembanad Lake, it is amongst India's largest lakes and is spread over 1500 sq kilometres. This bund is built at the narrowest point of the lake. The overall length of the lake is close to 100 kms.
India's longest railway bridge the "Vembanad Railway Bridge" too has been built in this lake. That bridge is 4.62 kilometres long - beating the record held by the Nehru Setu built across the Sone River.
