Rogers Greengage (Prunus Reine Claude Verte ) has lots of flowers this spring as it grows in a patio pot in a sunny position ... but very few bees have been seen - so Roger shows us he uses a soft paint brush to gently brush some of the yellow pollen off the male parts of the flowers (Stamens) and transfer the pollen onto the female part of the flower (The stigma).
Roger helps us recognise the different parts of the flower with some close up shots.
Then we discuss the difference and importance of knowing if your fruit tree is Self fertile of self infertile ...
Rogers Greengage is self fertile - which makes pollination easier, because the pollen from each flower will pollinate the same flower.
However, many fruit trees (especially some apples) are 'self infertile' which means they need pollen from another variety of apple to be transferred to the stigma to succeed with pollination .. so it is important to ask your nursery and garden centre what variety your tree is and whether it is self fertile or not.
