Black workers, mainly from the Bahamas, cleared the land and built most of the infrastructure of Miami Beach but were not allowed to live there. Black celebrity entertainers filled the nightclubs during the "hey day" of jazz in the Fifties but they could not stay in Miami Beach hotels. Now the Beach is diverse but it was a historic struggle.
